Stag weekends used to be called stag nights. And stag nights used to involve a night down the pub with ten of your best friends, with the lovely Barbara Boobies from down the road making a five minute guest appearance at a cost of £100 or so. Somewhere over the last few decades, the stag night has morphed into a fully fledged stag weekend, and your ten best friends have managed to stump up two or three days in an far-flung clime where no one will remember the glorious havoc you managed to wreak on someone else’s hometown.
For British men, that far-flung clime is often as exotic as Blackpool or Brighton, but the increasing popularity of Eastern Europe as a travel destination is opening up a whole host of other locations to play host to a multitude of three day ‘last night of freedom’ stag weekends every year for much the same cost as any popular British sea-side resort.
In some circles, Prague is fast becoming the stag capital of the world. And it makes sense too. A stag party is usually about three things: a last hoo-ra with your mates, beer and beautiful women getting naked. Given the popularity of Czech beer in the UK, the reputation that Eastern European women in general have attained of sublime beauty, and the across the board cheapness of the place – where better to go for a stag weekend?
The other thing Prague offers for the ultimate stag weekend, is a ton of day-time activities. Since the night turned into a weekend, the average stag weekend involves a lot more than cheap booze and strippers, and often takes in such diverse and manly activities as quad biking, paintballing and life drawing (depending on particular tastes of the stag in question) and Prague has plenty to offer in this department.

The usual stag weekend activities such as paintballing, clay pigeon shooting, quad biking and go-karting are all present and correct. But if you’ve trekked all the way to the Czech Republic in your determination to get away from your bride to be, why settle for that? Prospective stags will salivate at the prospect of shooting a genuine M16 (not at each other one would hope), white water rafting and in keeping with the general boozy theme of a stag weekend – a brewery tour to see the source of all your favourite lagers.
Stags are warned however, that the same economic differentials that can make a stag weekend in Prague come out favourably compared to a UK-based weekend also contribute to a need for a bit more care, particularly if visiting one of Prague’s many strip clubs (as stags are wont to do). The general advice is to stick to cash, avoiding credit cards where possible.
That aside, with cheap beer, a 24 hour nightlife and huge variety of activities one wouldn’t find in the UK, it’s easy to see why Prague is becoming so popular for the modern stag weekend.
